Doors vs walls inside your house: different approaches lead to different results!

Doors and walls are among the most important elements in your house, as they are some of the most visible, both literally and figuratively. This is why, in this article, we’ve decided to address a recurring topic among our clients, more precisely how to paint doors and walls, in relation to each other. From the beginning, we must mention that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to do it and each of the approaches below leads to different results, which could be considered satisfactory by some and less satisfactory by others.

1. Painting interior doors & walls in the same color. When they finish or renovate their house, many people think they should paint interior doors and walls in the same color. This might be the first idea that comes to mind, but this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the most logical or aesthetically pleasing one. In fact, a famous design principle states that, if two elements can’t have EXACTLY the same color, it’s better to have different shades. Why? Because the eye is far more sophisticated than we think and it will immediately tell the difference between two almost identical colors (similarly to how women do with nail polish). Since doors and walls are made of different materials, even using the same can of paint might lead to different results, therefore this is not exactly an ideal option;

2. Painting interior doors & walls in different colors. As we already mentioned before, painting interior doors & walls in different colors will lead to a more or less obvious contrast, which is visually pleasing. Of course, compared to the first and the last option in this article, this is by far the most generous, as you can combine the colors as you want. For example, nothing can stop you from painting your walls light green and your doors dark brown. If you have a daughter, the walls in her room might be pink, while the door can be bright blue. Literally and figuratively, possibilities are endless and you can explore them in any way;

3. Painting interior doors & walls in opposite colors. Last but not least, the most “radical” approach is to paint interior doors & walls in completely opposite colors. However, this approach slightly limits your creativity and freedom of expression, as any color has… exactly one opposite, logically. In this case, the easiest solution would be to paint your walls white and your doors black. However, as you’ll find out only later, the final result will be quite tiring for the eye, as the two colors are so far apart on the spectrum. Instead, we would recommend painting your walls in a very light blue shade (azure), while the doors will be dark burgundy (as this is the opposite or complementary).
