Turn your backyard into an outdoor room, with these useful tips!

If you have a generous backyard, maybe even fitted with a pool, you should make use of the space and arrange an “outdoor room”. Especially during the summer, there is nothing like chilling just outside of your house, either by the pool on a hot afternoon or on a sunbed, relaxing after a long day of work. However, when setting it up, you should avoid a few common mistakes that people make when starting such a project. Our specialists in design and functionality have compiled a list for you, which you can check below:

1. Don’t just bring an indoor room outside. Of course, when designing an outdoor room, the most important thing to remember is that… it’s outside! It shouldn’t look like bringing your living room or, even worse, your bedroom to your backyard. There is no room for fancy sofas, expensive carpets, or, worst-case scenario, fake plants since you are outdoors. Make sure that the materials used match the rest of the decor and they are at least slightly water-resistant, especially if you have a pool (and if you live in an area where it rains a lot during summer).

2. Don’t arrange the furniture incorrectly. Let’s say you have three armchairs and a coffee table you want to arrange in your backyard. How do you do it? Do you put each of the armchairs in a corner of the yard, with the coffee table in the middle? Or do you put all three around the coffee table, in a corner or the middle of the yard? Of course, the second option is preferable since it allows you to bring friends or family members closer together. This way, you can talk without shouting at each other, and you can rest your drinks on the table in front of you.

3. Don’t forget plants. This might seem obvious since you are outdoors, but some people don’t think about including nature in their design, even though the action takes place outside. Therefore, if you have at least one wall available, decorate it with climbing plants or hang flower pots on it. Of course, if your backyard already has a lawn, it might be enough. However, the last thing you want to do is use artificial plants outdoors. We know we mentioned it before, but trust us: it looks so bad that you will remember our advice!

4. Don’t overcrowd, nor leave the space empty. Last but not least, a common mistake that people do when decorating any room, not just an outdoor one, is overdecorating or under decorating it. In other words, they either put too much furniture or not enough. In both cases, it’s a mistake since the place will either look jammed, or it will be unfunctional and look deserted. If you also happen to have a pool, you should put even less furniture around it, to allow kids and adults to move around it. Generally, you can tell when you hit the “right” amount of furnishings when you look at the whole place from upstairs.
